The Aaliyah Biopic: A Non Biased Review

In case you’ve been living under a rock and somehow missed the massive backlash surrounding the Aaliyah biopic that premiered on Lifetime recently, I’m here to be the voice of reason.

Highlights…

As someone who was a fan of this enigmatic artist, I found it most intriguing that the film offered an unprecedented glimpse into the posthumous starlet’s private life. The overall accuracy of the private dialogues is clearly something to question. For instance, who told the filmmakers the details of private conversations that happened between Aaliyah and R. Kelly? Knowing what we know now about the fallen star makes the details displayed seem all the more accurate. Though I would have liked to see a more in-depth look at some moments in particular, it seems producers may have done the best they could with the information they had available. However, that being said…

Low Lights…

I’d be remiss if I neglected to mention that Aaliyah’s family wasn’t in support of this film, at all! Their lack of support not only made it difficult for the filmmakers to know the whole story, but also prevented them from using her actual music in the film. Further, the lack of support from Aaliyah’s family also stopped them from incorporating actual footage/pictures of the artist, a tactic commonly used to help make these types of movies appear realistic.
Furthermore, in addition to a questionable string of castings, it seems the movie may have delved too far into the singer’s private life. Elusive and recluse to the very end, Aaliyah would have never disclosed the details of the relationship and subsequent marriage to R. Kelly. Their relationship is something the singer fiercely denied until her very last day on Earth.

Overall…

This certainly wasn’t the worst “unauthorized” biopic I’ve ever seen. However, the movie felt rushed and failed to capture the true magic and legacy of the singer. If nothing else, the film succeeded in introducing and reintroducing Aaliyah’s music to new and old fans worldwide. Nevertheless, the unremarkable film has no bearing on the truly “one in a million” legend’s legacy. Aaliyah was and continues to be held as one of the biggest teen/adult artists of our generation.
